Authoring a Report

FreePint publishes a reports series to help practitioners find, use, manage and share work-related information. The FreePint FUMSI Series is planned around these practice areas, and reports are sold in the FreePint Shop.

We welcome proposals for FreePint FUMSI reports. We pay authors a license fee for the content.

Please read the details below if you are thinking of authoring a report for FreePint.

Please note: We are only looking to publish original material that hasn't been published elsewhere and which doesn't break copyright. Authors retain copyright to their work and license first serial rights to Free Pint Limited.

Content

FreePint FUMSI Reports are practical guides to a topic, aimed at practitioners or those with a particular information-related role or responsibility. We focus on four practice areas within the broad field of information:

  • Find Information: Search and research

  • Use Information: Analysis, advice, business management and data-based decision-making

  • Manage Information: Storage, organisation and retrieval

  • Share Information: Writing, publishing and training

Our aim is to publish reports that are not too academic and are easy to read. We aim to provide (where appropriate) practical action points, section summaries and executive summaries. FreePint FUMSI Reports include hands-on tools, which our editorial team helps authors create.

To propose a report idea, follow these three simple steps:

  1. Submit your report idea using the Report Proposal Form.

  2. If this is of interest then we will ask you to submit more information using the Detailed Proposal Form.

  3. During production, we will ask your ideas on promoting the report by completing the Marketing Form

After agreeing a working title, outline and proposed delivery date, we will ask you to provide:

  • a title for the report

  • a table of contents and introduction

  • biographical note

  • acknowledgements

  • copyright notes where copyright permission has been received for included content

  • the content of the report in word processed format (e.g. Microsoft Word). If possible, please use 'Styles' for headings

  • the content of the tools, or at least notes on valuable activities for report users (we will work with you to develop effective tools, as necessary)

  • abbrevations glossary

  • graphics (screenshots, charts, etc.) as separate GIF or BMP files; photos as JPG

  • a list of citations, refences, additional resources and further reading, as appropriate.

There are no upper or lower limits on the length of the report. A final formatted length of 40-50 pages, including hands-on tools, is about right.

We will also ask you to supply:

  • a reasonably good quality digital photo of yourself (not a passport photo). A head-and-shoulder shot is preferred.

  • your name, your job title, and your organisational affiliation as you would like it to appear in the report and in promotional information.

  • a 100 word biography paragraph for inclusion on the sales information page.

We will:

  • commission a cover graphic and format the report

  • assign an ISBN to the report and notify the necessary ISBN databases

  • proof-read the content, but do not take responsibility for inaccuracies or omissions

  • create a sales information page on the FreePint Web site in the report sales section at . Please supply text for this page, along the lines of those written for previous reports (introductory text; main features in a bulleted list; brief author details)

  • make a PDF sample available on the FreePint Web site, to include cover, table of contents, author biography and order form

  • create banner graphics which can be used to promote the report (468x60 pixel and 125x125 pixel)

  • write a press release.

We reserve the right to edit contributions, and may shorten long URLs in the article using the URL shortening service DigBig. Please clearly state any affiliations or connections you have with products and services covered in the report.

We will show you a draft and final editions of the report, and will not 'publish' it (i.e. sell it to customers) until we have your approval. We reserve the right to have the final say about what is published and what isn't published.

Thank you for your interest in authoring a FreePint FUMSI report. We look forward to receiving your proposal, via the Report Proposal Form.
